Moyra Derby is an artist based in the UK. The work is painting based using expanded pictorial structures, testing propositions about how material decisions and fabricated limits hold attention within picture space. Works are often double sided, or have multiple set ups, and incorporate divisions, rotations and repetitions. The gaps and glitches in attention all inform this approach. Freestanding works allow painting to be spatially present, placed on the floor or set up on a table. These structures prompt physical participation to the extent of a necessary move to see from one side to the other, and imaginative participation, holding visual information in the space between seeing and recalling. The painting processes tend to be indirect, using image transfer methods. These restrictions help to negotiate painting’s investment in abstraction while also claiming its mimetic potential.
